Is there a statute of limitations on debt collection?

Every state in the country has different rules and regulations pertaining to the collection of older debt, varying in length of limitation periods and type of debt specified. In Texas, creditors and collections agencies have four years from the date of last activity on your account to sue for compensation, after which the debt is considered null and it is no longer legal to pursue an action against the debtor. The date of last activity is specified as the last day that payment was made on the account by the debtor, or the date that the debt was incurred if no payments have been made.
