Common ways identity thieves obtain information

Posted on Tuesday, September 24th, 2013 at 7:28 pm

There are, unfortunately, many outlets for identity thieves to gain credit card information, telephone numbers, or even social security numbers from victims.

According to the United States Department of Justice, one of the most common is through the internet. Often, these people will send out emails promising benefit if they receive your banking information. Scams like these may give thieves information they need to make fraudulent bank account withdrawals.

Another tactic used by those looking to steal identity is the “shoulder surfing” method. This is when someone looks over a victim’s shoulder as they are withdrawing money from the ATM, or listening in as the victim gives their information to their bank over the phone.
